Ok, start by answering some of these questions:
a) did you install SA via CPAN?
if answer to a) was "no", install it via CPAN now and move to question b)
b) did it pass all of its regression tests?
if answer to b) was "yes", skip to question e)
c) have you tried installing again?
d) do they all pass now?
if answer to d) was "no", you've somehow broken your VPS v2 setup.
Congrats! End of quiz.
e) the problem (with a high confidence interval) does not lie with
SpamAssassin. You might want to try installing qmail from ports; if
you've already tried ports, you might want to try installing it via
pkg_add. Qmail is otherwise unsupported--might want to try sendmail.
End of quiz.
