Problem solved.
I tried rehash and even unhash followed by rehash, but that also didn't make any difference; and setenv consistently showed the old value of PATH (path).
After a thinking break I had a little brainwave: logged off and logged on again (reasoning that would "restart" the shell), and then did setenv - hey presto, there's my new value.
And now I can do 'savelogs --help'
Phew!
Still interested in any recommendations for a FreeBSD book. I have an old UNIX in a nutshell which is often not very helpful. (It did help a bit now with its section on C shell.)
