hi,

 have a look at the 

LogTime
Log time with each message.

configuration directive in the clamav.conf, it will add the time in the logs
and i agree that it makes life easier. On my side i do not meet any issue 
with clamd ut i am a very low (15 users) mail server so...

on vps v2 you can use snmp to look at clamd proceesses and relaunch it, you can also
do the old trick :

touch /var/run/clamdloop
while (-f /var/run/clamdloop):
   clamd blablablla
   sleep 5


in a shell script and remove /var/run/clamdloop if you want to stop the loop.
