You were absolutely right. After testing for a couple of
days in a very LOW load environment, I saw that Clamd simply
crashes from time to time. No indication as to why - no
error messages - it just goes away.  Plus the clamav logging
is frustrating in the degree of its obtuseness; it doesn't
even reflect date/time of error messages so it is hard to
trace.

I think the alternative would be to regularly run clamd from
a cron job, perhaps once an hour - from what I can tell it
doesn't seem to spawn multiple instances of itself.

But I'll wait & see what load issues are first.
