Adding the following line to crontab might do the trick:

*/5 * * * * /usr/local/bin/virtual sendmail -q

That will have sendmail check its queued mail every 5 minutes.

(After doing the above, be sure to monitor ~/var/log/messages for awhile
to make sure nothing unexpected happens.)
