I've been running freshclam as a daemon for awhile now. (I.e., I no longer
put a freshclam entry in crontab.)

You can start freshclam as a daemon with a command something like:

# freshclam --daemon --checks=12

issued from the command line. It will check the virus signatures 12 times
every 24 hours (every two hours).

I found instructions for installing clamav from ports at:
http://www.technoids.org/clamav-milter.html . That document is a bit
out-of-date now, but it's still helpful. (It also tells how to run
freshclam as a daemon rather than from cron, if you're interested ...)

You said earlier that you don't install clamav from ports. I just upgraded
mine from ports, and it seems to work fine. I *did* change one step from
the steps listed in perlcode.org:

Instead of "make install" (following "make deinstall"), I used the command
"make reinstall".

Good luck!
