[vps-mail] Secure email

I have a medical office as a client. Right now they send email through their
hotmail account. I'm convincing them to use their POP3 account because
they've had problems with their email.

They also want to be able to send email to each other securely to comply
with HIPAA laws which is their other reason for dumping hotmail (For non-US
folks, HIPAA is a stringent set of medically-related privacy laws).

In the past, I've set up secure forms so the submitted info goes to the
secure server and the client retrieves it securely through Outlook. But does
that work for outgoing email being sent through Outlook as well if they set
up "This server requires encrypted connection (SSL)" for the SMTP server as
well? Does it still go through Port 25?

These secure emails are only being sent from one person in the office to
another (never to an outside person) so I assume it is easier to control the
security. When they are traveling, they can log on to the iManager securely
and send and receive their email. They don't want a VPN because they do a
lot of traveling and want to have access wherever they are.

Does anyone know if sending email this way is secure? Does it meet the HIPAA
regulations for privacy?

Regards,

Jim Smith
