[vps-mail] Why didn't spamd restart?

Aaugh! Deluged with spam this morning.
A quick check of the server shows that the server went down
about 11 hours ago. Ps -ax shows spamd is not running.
I had this line in my rc file:
/usr/local/bin/spamd -d --pidfile=/var/run/spamd.pid --socketpath=/var/run/spamd.sock
(The line is not wrapped, even though it will probably end
up wrapped in the email).
My question is, why didn't spamd restart?
The other processes controlled by lines in the rc file
launched without a problem.
Anyway, I'd like to figure out what went wrong.
