Sure--that will also work I think. Sometimes procmail will refuse to work with unsafe files, but those are limited to configuration (rc) files typically, not delivery files.
Scott, I could swear I had this exact problem with delivery files where procmail wouldn't use them and started this lockfile problem. I assume that was in the same directory; maybe had I pursued this by naming lockfiles in a writeable directory or whatever. Running as root doesn't feel like such a great idea to me!
