I don't know why you are doing this in the first place.  Verio keeps the
ports tree up to date for you.  There really isn't any reason for you to
update them yourself.  Yes, they are read only, but you shouldn't need
to modify any of the makefiles anyway.  There are ways to do it if you
need, but from my experience, its only going to cause more problems.

What are you trying to do that seems to require you updating ports
yourself?
