I get this error trying to update ports:
# cvsup -L2 -g /root/portsupfile
Parsing supfile "/root/portsupfile"
Cannot open "/root/portsupfile": No such file or directory
This is a VPS2. Do I need this step?

Yes, there is a little more to it than you listed.
