Interesting...

# id clamav
uid=106(clamav) gid=106(clamav) groups=106(clamav), 6(mail)

# ls -lsn /var/log/clam-update.log
 8 -rw-------  1 106  106  7747 May  5 12:42 /var/log/clam-update.log

# ls -lsdn /var/log
2 drwxr-xr-x  4 0  0  1536 May  5 00:00 /var/log

So, according to you, this shouldn't work, right?

User clamav needs to have write access to /var/log if it is to *CREATE* a
new file in there. Not in order to write to a file that exists already.
