I only used it temporarily for the purposes of this test and removed it
immediately afterwards. Not that it would affect my ability to *send* mail
from the VPS2 but it might result in a high ratio of false positives among
mail received.

I simply ask my mailer (sylpheed, http://sylpheed.good-day.net) to spit out
the session transcript.

Methinks your mailer isn't doing SMTP AUTH right and that your VPS is an
otherwise open relay for the block you whitelist as and when your IP address
changes. Have you tried with a different mailer?
Contact me off-list if you like and we can exchange IP information so that I
can run a few tests.
