I think you'll find that they are using the same authentification that 
verio used for years, "POP before SMTP"

Regardless, there are so many SMTP solutions that no clued individual 
would need to be talking to MXs IMO. Nor would they know how usually. 
Bulk mailers do, though!

However, our local P&T has been on blocklists on and off. In the 
beginning they ran an open relay! They still have free POP and SMTP though.
