I just realized that I didn't answer the question above. After trying several
things, I killed the milter daemons, edited the sendmail mc file and removed
the milter lines. Then I regenerated the sendmail.cf and restarted sendmail.
(I probably overreacted. However, I noticed the problem after a correspondent
asked why I hadn't responded to an earlier e-mail that had 8 ZIPped
attachments. A look at the maillog showed that sendmail had been returning 4xx
[temporarily undeliverable] statuses for a day and a half. After turning off
ClamAV/MIMEDefang, all those e-mails--which had been queued on the next-step
mailservers that were trying to send me mail--showed up. Another disaster
averted.)
Ben
(P.S. I've heard that ClamAV might have a leak in its "unZIPping" routines.
All I need is more time to analyze what went wrong ...)
