That is a good point.  You should be able to see whether you are being 
blocked. (via error messages in your client or bounces depending on your 
setup)  I always find it useful to check my dnsbl setup by using a service 
that I know will block my address--verio.blackholes.us 
(http://www.blackholes.us/).
