And this is currently the only semi-reliable way. We often brand the
tarball with the version also. You'll see those in /usr/local/contrib
(e.g., Mail-SpamAssassin-2.54.tar.gz, etc.).

The software isn't always pulled from /usr/local/contrib, however
(sometimes it's copied or linked from a skeleton hierarchy), so the
vinstall script itself is probably the most consistent way (though we
occasionally have errors where we forget to update the version string
in the vinstall also).
