Re[2]: [vps-mail] On the subject of permissions, mail & SA

Scott, remember the little comment you posted a few days ago
about why I should never have a program set to 777?

This is a little bit OT (it doesn't have anything to do with
sendmail or spamassassin), but I'm wondering if you can give
me a little tutorial on how to set permissions on a VPS2 so
that a cgi can run properly.

I've run into an issue with Dada Mail, but basically the
same thing might apply to other CGI's.

Like any mailing list software, Dada needs to have a place
to store its lists; this needs to be a directory that Dada
can write to. Because it is web based, I need to make it so
that the directory is -rwx- when invoked by the administrative
program, and at least -w- when a general user wants to
subscribe/unsubscribe to the list using a web based form.

The installation instructions tell me I "might" have to set
the directory where the list information is stored to 777,
while cautioning that this is not a good idea.

In fact, this is exactly what I had to do, because I found
through experimentation that no other settings worked.

So basically, following the admonition that if I have to use
777, I'm probably doing something wrong, what should
generally work in this situation?

-Abigail
