[vps-mail] Sendmail stopped working - any suggestions??

I have been having some issues with permissions (for procmail logging)
so have freed up some permissions (ie done a chmod 660 on the
/var/log/procmail.spam.log, ..and it seemed to work). Apart from that
all I touched is a user_prefs file for SA (which I have now removed
again) and then all of a sudden I start getting the Service unavailable
(output error)error (maillog)below:

It appears to me that verythng is fine until it tries to deliver the
mail to the local mailbox.
Permissions are:
Mail dir: drw-rw----   2 root    mail    512 Mar 25 19:35 mail
Mailbox:  -rw-rw----   1 mailusername  clients   542 Mar 30 14:17
mailusername

...but this problem is for both currently configured users, and was
working fine previously.
Any help very welcome (I have even rebooted, having the luxury of only 1
client on this new server). Sendmail is running as root.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?!
