By removing the lmtp, you tell sendmail not to use the Local Mail Transfer
Protocol (LMTP) when it talks to the local delivery agent (procmail). You can
read about LMTP in RFC 2033 (see http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2033.html, for
example).
I can't tell you whether to use it or not. (There are many differing
opinions--especially with regards to procmail--floating around.) It is
*probably* better to use LMTP ... but I've noticed that procmail's error
messages tend to be more cryptic when using LMTP. (In your case, maybe the
error messages were more cryptic *without* LMTP?)
