Thanks to all for the very helpful replies.
I'm working on a site (on an off, when I have time) where I have a need to
present Whois data for certain IP number and domains. Until now, I've
manually requested the whois data and stored them in files to be linked to.
Since this is for a (fast-growing) collection, that's to much work, so
automating getting the whois data was _very_ high on my todo list.
While researching some anti-spam measures I'm also taking on the server
(which brought me to the very helpful vps-mail list) I just stumbled over
the WP Whois proxy written by John Bro
(http://wp-whois-proxy.sourceforge.net/) - it seemed the ideal solution.
The difficulty was that while I've written some utilities in Perl for the
Windows platform, I've never used Perl on a (Unix) server, where I use PHP
for all scripting. So I'm quite unfamiliar with setting up a Perl program
and the modules it requires in a FreeBSD/VPS environment (and I'm no Unix
expert either :)).
John Oligario mentioned having had problems with CPAN on VPS B, but with
the hints on the list for using 'vcpan' instead and (in an earlier thread
here) preceding the command with 'unlimit' to get over the memory limit it
seems to run fine, actually.
I've now managed to install WP Whois proxy and have it running; I can also
see that it's using Net::DNS and that the results it gives are correct, so
it seems the error messages I saw during test install of Net::DNS were
'false alarm'. (Now, to integrate it in the site, I can "wrap" the whois
proxy in a PHP routine that will also take care of cacheing the results for
me - but that's not a problem any more, just a little work. :) )
Meanwhile I'll keep in mind the iserver@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx list; if I have
further problems with (installing) Perl modules or CPAN, I'll certainly go
there. I'm grateful for all your help; even though this was not the "best"
place to ask, it certainly was a "good" one!
