I agree with you, Scott. However, for the technically-challenged (the
majority of humanity), it is the only way that they understand to do
things. It is the quick and easy (aka lazy) way.
And we programmers are doing it to ourselves by trying to make it easy to
handle spam instead of dealing with the real issue (the spammers). For
example, programs such as Eudora, Yahoo, etc. now allow users to
'one-click' filter junk messages which will automatically recognize similar
future messages and handle it accordingly (which could in fact allow them
to submit it to SpamCop). Additionally, does any common user actually know
the difference between "junk", "trash" or "spam"? Furthermore, many
webhosts, trying to keep their customers happy, are setting up automatic or
even one-click processing of spam for their customers. As we progress to
make things easier for our customers, we are creating a greater problem for
ourselves. IMO, we should be putting more effort into getting rid of
spammers than getting rid of spam.
