Matt, would you mind sharing your syntax for the alias
file? Also, where are aliased commands set on a VPS2

Sure - It took some playing with to figure out I needed quotes, but here you go - put this in your .cshrc file (at least that's the shell I use and its where I put such things)

alias restart_spamd "/usr/local/etc/rc.d/sa-spamd.sh stop; /usr/local/etc/rc.d/sa-spamd.sh start"
