Actually most of the mailing lists I monitor have people who constantly answer "read the archives!" (not here) and the archives search sucks so bad it never comes up with the right posts. The more technical the subject, the more the search seems to suck! Sames with some wikis, they come up with a zillion references but none are the answer to your question :)
So, you have to browse the list when you really need to know something and that can be a lousy experience depending on the browse interface.
