RE: Re[4]: [vps-mail] Large Spamassassin bayes_toks file

Matt,
You are right, the symlink is a work-around, but it did the trick! I was
able to finally get my commands to work on the user database rather than the
root directory. I got the journal to rebuild the database. The downside was
that it showed me that my token file was so large and had so many outdated
entries, that I finally decided to start over again; but now I know how to
keep it at a manageable size.

BTW, if anyone wants to know whether the Bayes filter works, I now know how
well it was working. I wondered if I'd notice the difference after removing
my bayes token file and starting over. Yep, all those spam messages that I
had "taught" bayes to toss, are appearing in my inbox again <eeeekk!>. It's
only been a couple of hours of starting over and there is a noticeable
difference. Now I gotta spend a couple of weeks retraining bayes as to which
are ham vs. spam.

For those not clear how this Bayes Filter thing works (other folks can quit
reading here if you prefer <grin>), think of hiring an assistant to go
through your email and sorting them into spam and non-spam folders. At
first, your assistant won't know that the sports medicine newsletter is
legit and will throw it in the spam folder. After a while of seeing you take
it out of the spam folder, s/he will learn that you want those. Likewise,
after thinking that you want all email pertaining to sports medicine but
seeing you toss everything but the newsletter back into the spam folder,
your smart assistant will figure out exactly which ones you like to keep and
which ones you want to toss.

In my case, now that I have my assistant trained to know my quirks, s/he
leaves, and I have to train a brand new assistant... so that is where I am
today <sigh>. But I know how to keep my new assistant happy now (by weeding
out the older tokens), so I'll willingly trudge through the 2-3 weeks of
training so I can again have a dependable assistant... uhhh... I mean, a
dependable filter.

That's my tale of joy and sorrow for the day <grin>.

Regards,

Jim Smith
