Not quite a clue - but it was instructive ;-)
At least it gave me a hunch to try something - which worked:
In my Eudora settings I'd always had "Allow authentication" checked - including for those personalities where I used smtp.mydomain.com to send the mail. This always worked (until the new sendmail.cf) though of course I had no idea why.
Looking at the more verbose messages log, I found that what actually seemed to happen was that Eudora would connect (indeed) and then try AUTH as the first command - which was rejected by sendmail in its new configuration; and then Eudora (or sendmail) apparently gave up. So "Allow authentication" seemed to be interpreted as "I'll try only AUTH and nothing else".
What I tried then was simply to turn of the checkbox "Allow authentication" and send my test-email again. And this time it went through! Bingo.
OK, so now I know how to (re)configure my Eudora accounts. Log level is back at 9. Access.db not needed for this particular problem (contrary to what I expected).
On to setting up acces.db - will report back.
