That sounds about right. (Periods of 3 and 5 days are pretty common.) You can configure the amount of time in the queue in sendmail.cf. There are also sendmail options to change the expiration time--including one to make the files expire "now".
On VPS1, I think the system mailqd cleans out old queue files after 3-4 weeks (in case some orphans are left in the queue).
